Andy and Carol Rees purchased Major Bonanza from Bill Moomey in 1972 sight unseen when he was only 2 hours old. They showed him at every major halter futurity on the West coast winning almost all of them. Major stood grand as a yearling several times and went on to be a Superior Halter Horse. After basic training Major went in training will Bob Avila and Little did they know what this foal would bring! The Legend began.
Million Dollar Major (Stormy) arrived May 19 at 10:15 pm right in the middle of a large storm with no electricity. What and Entrance! Hence the nickname Stormy!
15 time World Champion and 7 time reserve World Champion Sire Major Bonanza died June 20 1997. Born in 1972 Major went on to be a superior halter horse and renowned performance horse. An AQHA champion he earned awards in multiple events including Halter, western pleasure, english pleasure, working cowhorse, cutting and more. After retiring from the show pen, Major stood to outside mares and was one of the nations premier AQHA sires. Not only did his offspring earn thousands of points in many events but also won thousands of dollars in futurities and open events. In today's world of dollar earnings versus points it is calculated that the points earned would have a value of close to 10 million Dollars. The highlight of his resume is that he sired 15 AQHA World Champions and 7 reserve World Champions in seven different events, Cutting, Working Cowhorse, Heading & Heeling, Trail, Reining and Western Riding.
In the early 1990s we froze a limited amount of semen as a test for shipping. We kept this semen in storage for 20 years before we bred a mare for Winston Hansema of Weatherford Texas. This fine gelding is now in California competing in Team roping.
In 2016 we bred our outstanding CD Lights mare to Major and at 10:15 pm on May 19th she gave us a beautiful chestnut stud colt that is the spitting image of his Dad. Now you have the opportunity to breed to the legendary sire Major Bonanza. This will be a rare chance to go back in time and combine the genes of a Legend with a great mare of today.
Science has now given us the ability to extend the limited number of semen straws we have using ICSi sperm injection fertilization. We have shipped semen to Texas A & M and it has been fractioned into small straws. These ICSI straws are now stored at Weatherford Equine Breeding Center and Texas A&M.
This new and exciting science gives the descriminating Quarter Horse performance breeder the opportunity to outcross the great horses of today with a legend from the past. Major is negative on the 5 panel inherited trait test. We are currently booking for the 2018 breeding season.
